Verity post-install problems - Unable to create collection
One of my clients has recently moved to HostMySite's new ColdFusion VPS servers. However, the servers do not come pre-installed with verity. You have to download the standalone installation from the adobe site.
Though the installation was smooth I experienced a series of problems when trying to create a collection. From "Unable to create collection" to "com.verity.api.administration.ConfigurationException: General failure. (-2)". Despite excellent posts from Doug Hughes as well as Adobe forums and several uninstall-reinstall attempts, nothing seemed to work.
Eventually I decided to try a different strategy:
By default the standalone installation installs to c:\coldfusionverity.
Instead, I installed the server to C:\CFusionM7\verity and voila, I was able to create a collection without a problem.

You are correct that verity is not pre-installed by default. There is installing batch file in c:\coldfusionmx7\verity folder. There are two options: 1) you can install it via RDC or request HMS support dept. to install it for you. I notice that their customer have them to install it and I used to work in support dept.
Aaron,
If you are curious about HMS VPS plans, some of HMS customers posted forum at http://forums.hostmysite.com/viewtopic.php?t=2180
