Service Snapshot Manager - No more batch files

Open captivate presentation - Service Snapshot Manager - No more batch files

On my laptop I have CFMX, CFMX7, JRUN, JBOSS, Weblogic, SQL Server, Oracle and the list goes on and on. Of course running all those services at once would bring even my mighty Thinkpad to a screeching halt.
I used to stop/start services using batch files, but managing all those batch files became a hassle. I now use a tiny app I had one of my talented associates build called "Service Snapshot Manager".

The application allows you to create "Snapshots" of windows services and switch between the "Snapshots" using a tiny tray app.

Dan G. Switzer, II's Gravatar Excellent Job! Like you, I've been using a series of batch files w/command line switches to stop/start services on my laptop. This program will certainly be put to good use!

Doug Gibson's Gravatar Nice tool. Would be nice to have an actionof "restart" or "cycle" though, which is in the Windows services dialog as well.

Bill's Gravatar very cool - thanks for sharing.

a thought on "restart" it might be a nice modification to queue events. So you could do something like:

net stop "ColdFusion MX Application Server"
    net stop W3SVC
net start "ColdFusion MX Application Server"
    net start W3SVC

I have had problems in the past restarting MX and not having IIS pick up the binding again (though this may be fixed now, i dunno).

Bill's Gravatar well that formatting didn't work on that at all:

    1. net stop coldfusion mx application server
    2. net stop w3svc
    3. net start coldfusion mx application server
    4. net start w3svc

hopefully the linebreaks showup this time.. sorry about the double post.

Shlomy Gantz's Gravatar Bill, several people requested this feature, the functionality will probably be integrated into the next release.

Bill's Gravatar Hi again, just wanted to mention what may be a bug (or could just be my slow machine).

I have a profile that starts up everything I need for CFMX development on a MSSQL server. However, for some unknown reason the mssqlserver service never starts and I have to go do it manually.

I have a batch file (from the past) that I can use as well and it works fine.

The main difference I notice is the batch file takes a while to start each service while your tool gives the appearance that each service started very quickly. I'm wondering if maybe the tool should wait until each command completes before proceeding to the next..

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the next release. Thanks again,
    Bill

Damien's Gravatar Hey Bill, that's a known problem with MS SQL Server and MSDE, it returns "hey I'm ready" before it actually is. I don't think there's much that can be done, aside from adding an optional delay option to events.

    Greg Stewart's Gravatar Hi,
Just wanted to let you know that if you have the .Net framework version 2 installed you can't install this extremely useful app. Just wanted to flag it just in case you weren't already aware of it.

Neal Laugman's Gravatar Still using this wonderful app! There are others out there but this is by far the most convenient. If you aren't going to update it any more, would you consider making the code available? Thanks again!!

Mike Hunter's Gravatar It is a sweet utility that easily lets you create profiles to start and stop different combinations of Windows services. I have 4 profiles on my development system, one for PHP development, one for Rails development, one for ASP development and finally one for developing nothing! This utility lets me switch between the profiles by clicking on an icon in my system tray. Very simple.
